| Parents accuse state of trying to take over mixed Jewish-Arab school | | By Nir Hasson -
Haaretz
"The Max Rayne bilingual school in Jerusalem may not open its doors at the beginning of the school year due to a dispute over the school`s joint Jewish-Arab management. The students` parents are threatening not to send their children to school after its two principals were recently replaced, accusing the municipality and Education Ministry of scheming to take control of the facility and change its character. | Failed Grade : Palestinian Education System in East Jerusalem 2010 | | Ir Amim - Despite the duty of the state to provide free education, in the coming school year thousands of children in East Jerusalem will again remain outside of the education system. The continuing neglect of the Arab education system in Jerusalem has caused a severe shortage of classrooms and this year again the Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Jerusalem have avoided addressing that shortage in any meaningful way. The result is that in the 2010-2011 school year the families of thousands of Palestinian children will have to pay large sums of money to get the education they should have been getting for free. | 25/8/2010 |

| Is the Light Rail Racist? Of Course it is | | Joharah Baker - MIFTAH - It was almost funny to read an article published in Haaretz a few days ago about how municipality officials got their feathers all ruffled over a poll carried out by the CityPass Consortium, the company that won the Jerusalem light rail tender, which asked residents if it bothered them that Palestinians would be using the trains. Two of the questions ran like this: "There are three stops in Shuafat; does this bother you?" and "All passengers, Jews and Arabs, can enter the train freely, without undergoing a security check. Does this bother you?"

| Netanyahu`s `easy Ramadan` | | Khaled Amayreh - Al-Ahram - Netanyahu`s congratulatory words to Muslims were tinged with significant hypocrisy and chutzpah. Indeed, as he uttered his words, Israeli bulldozers were unearthing and crushing Muslim graves at the ancient Mamanullah Cemetery, located in West Jerusalem, not far from the former armistice line between the eastern and western parts of the city. There, thousands -- some say tens of thousands -- of Muslims are buried.

| Dozens faint during prayers under Ramadan sun | | Maan News - Men under 50 and women under 45 from the West Bank are not permitted to enter Jerusalem or the Al-Aqsa Mosque area without permits issued by Israeli Civil Administration officials. Calls to support the continued use of the holy site are thus answered by the men and women able to travel to the area, mostly senior citizens who are particularly at risk of health problems under the hot sun.

| Fighting expulsion and Western hypocrisy in Jerusalem | | Rahela Mizrahi - Electronic Intifada - Since the Red Cross is supposed to protect Palestinian inhabitants of occupied East Jerusalem but has never fulfilled that role, Totah, Attoun and Abu Arafeh have put Red Cross officials in a difficult and awkward position. Since Israel occupied the city in the June 1967 War, 86,226 Palestinians have been stripped of their residency rights. By seeking refuge in the Red Cross compound, the three men have drawn attention to the hypocrisy of the international donor community which funds both the aid organizations and underwrites Israel`s apartheid policies. The principle is clear: human rights organizations multiply in direct proportion to the deepening of oppression. They keep real activists out of the struggle, compete with authentic local organizations, blur the signs of oppression and create an illusion of normality in the overall situation.

| Wallaje in the balance | | Nir Hasson - Common Ground News - The residents of Wallaje can go and see what their future will look like (provided they will be allowed to cross the check point) in northern Jerusalem, in the village Akeb and the Shalom neighbourhood, and in other places which have been artificially severed from the city by the barrier. The barrier has made life in these places impossible. Due to the agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the PA is not allowed to operate services in these neighbourhoods, but due to security concerns, the Israeli services are not available in the neighbourhoods beyond the barrier. This has created areas which lack the rule of law, where infrastructures are falling apart and civil and public security is deteriorating. | 19/8/2010 |

| Absentees against Their Will –Property Expropriation in East Jerusalem under the Absentee Property Law | | Ir Amim - When East Jerusalem was annexed to Israel in 1967, all the laws of the State of Israel were applied to the annexed territory, including the Absentee Property Law of 1950, whose purpose was to transfer to the possession of the State of Israel the property of
the Palestinian refugees of 1948. | 18/8/2010 |

| Funding to Stop Palestinians from Renting in Jerusalem Settlement | | AIC - "`The idea is to halt the plague of Arabs renting flats throughout Pisgat Zeev,` notes `A`, coordinator of this initiative, who refused to give his name or that of the funding organization. The local Hebrew-language newspaper Mynet noted that the target population of this initiative is national-religious couples and primarily settlers. According to `A,` `the more settlers, the better. The Arabs get angrier when they see a settler who rents a flat here`"

Al Haq -
"
Al-Haq is deeply concerned about Firas Al-Maraghi’s hunger strike that he has been holding since 26 July 2010 opposite the Israeli embassy in Berlin, Germany. Firas, a Palestinian resident of occupied East Jerusalem who is married to a German national, is protesting a decision which was taken by the Israeli embassy to ban the couple’s new-born daughter from being registered as a Jerusalem resident. This decision breaches Firas’s right to live in Jerusalem with his family.

The destruction of graves was the third in just over a week, with Israeli officials telling Ma`an that the graves were destroyed because they were "built illegally with the aim to take over the plot."

| Doron Zahavi Accused Of Running Israel’s Abu Ghraib | | Jonathan Cook - Countercurrents - Jerusalem : A police officer known as “Major George” who is accused of torturing Arab prisoners in his previous role as chief interrogator in a secret military jail has been appointed to oversee relations with Jerusalem’s Palestinian population, it has emerged. The decision has been greeted with stunned disbelief from human rights groups, who say unresolved allegations against Major George that he brutally abused Arab prisoners for many years should disqualify him from such a sensitive post.
