Evictions continue in East Jerusalem IRIN - Ma`an - "The Israel Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), a non-governmental lobby group says Israel has since built 90,000 homes for Jews in East Jerusalem, in order, they claim, to maintain a 72:28 percent majority of Jews over Arabs in the city. Tens of thousands more residents of East Jerusalem live under the threat of becoming homeless - 15,000 buildings in the area are considered illegal and have demolition orders hanging over them, although it is uncertain when or if those demolitions will take place. A license to dig Meron Rapoport - Haaretz - "Over the last few days, Israel Antiquities Authority workers have uncovered some interesting archaeological findings in the excavations next to the Mugrabi Gate. The items are not remnants from the First or Second Temple era, or even from the Byzantine, Crusader or Mameluk period. They found a jar of jam. ..The researchers are able to speculate with a large degree of certainty that it is a jar dating from the late Palestinian era. It dates back to an era when the Mugrabi Ascent was part of the Mugrabi quarter, a poor Arab neighborhood that bordered the Western Wall and was completely razed by Israel in June 1967 in order to make room for the Western Wall plaza. Losing Jerusalem Danny Rubinstein Haaretz - "Every action that Israeli spokesmen define as a measure of strengthening the Israeli hold in the capital of Israel is defined in Palestinian and Arab terms as a continuation of the efforts to Judaize Jerusalem."14/3/2007
THE POLITICS OF URBAN PLANNING: Jerusalem: whose very own and golden city? Philippe Rekacewicz and Dominique Vidal - Le Monde diplomatique 13/3/2007
Palestinian village torn from Jerusalem neighboursAlistair Lyon - Reuters - " Sheikh Saad, a small Palestinian village perched on Jerusalem`s southeastern extremity has the misfortune to lie just inside the West Bank. Its people have few links with the occupied territory. Their close relatives, their school and even their cemetery are in the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Jebel Mukabbir, from which they are now separated by a steel fence and coils of barbed wire.
