|Why Jerusalem? Israel`s hidden agenda||Dan Lieberman
Israel competes with the United States as the focus of the Jewish people. It needs a unified Jerusalem to gain recognition as the home of Judaism. By controlling all the holy sites, Israel would command attention from Muslim and Christian leaders. These leaders would be forced to talk with Israel, and Israel would have a bargaining advantage in disputes.

Thirty-one years ago, the High Court of Justice rejected a petition by Mohammed Said Burkan to lease an apartment in Jerusalem`s Jewish Quarter on the ruins of his family`s home which, he asserted, had been bought under Ottoman rule. The ruling put a legal gloss on the practice of blocking access by non-Jews to state land. After years of steady encroachment, Burkan now lives in the heart of a Jewish neighborhood...deputy Supreme Court President Haim Cohen, who was considered one of the most liberal justices, wrote in a landmark verdict, "There is no improper discrimination in allocating each quarter as a home to its own community ..."||25/7/2009|

Aluf Benn -
The U.S. administration has issued a stiff warning to Israel not to build in the area known as E-1, which lies between Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Ma`aleh Adumim. Any change in the status quo in E-1 would be "extremely damaging," even "corrosive,"
|Settlers undermining legitimacy of Israel`s existence ||Asher Susser - Haaretz - The current settlement campaign, on the other hand, like the unnecessary construction in East Jerusalem, is not designed to ensure the existence of the state of the Jews, but rather to deprive the Arabs of their state in the West Bank and their capital in Arab Jerusalem.||30/7/2009|

|Abusing Jerusalem to Assail Peace: the Case of the Shepherd`s Hotel||Lara Friedman - Daniel Seidemann -
Netanyahu has a long history of using Jerusalem to try to destroy peace efforts, including his decision, taken immediately after returning from peace negotiations at the Wye Plantation in 1998, to build Har Homa, and, more famously, the 1996 decision to open the Hasmonean Tunnel under the Muslim Quarter of the Old City. The Shepherd’s Hotel is just the latest Jerusalem project that Netanyahu has seized on to undermine the prospects for peace and a two state solution. The fact that Moskowitz is a central player in this affair – just as he was in the Hasmonean Tunnel debacle, lends credence to this analysis.
|Palestinians Can`t Buy Homes in West Jerusalem ||WAFA Palestine News Agency - Israeli Attorney Yael Azoulay, of Zeev and Naomi Weil Lawyers and Notary Office, explains that if a foreign national purchases an apartment they must show the ILA proof of eligibility to immigrate to Israel in accordance with the Law of Return. Non-Jewish foreigners cannot purchase apartments. This group includes Palestinians from the east of the city, who have Israeli identity cards but are residents rather than citizens of Israel.||23/7/2009|
|Moskowitz Dividing Jerusalem With His Millions ||Joharah Baker - MIFTAH - If President Barak Obama remains adamant in his stance towards Jewish settlements in Jerusalem, all his administration has to do then is impose one simple concept: reciprocity. Just as Netanyahu says Jews have a right to reclaim lands he says they own in east Jerusalem, Palestinians should be able to reclaim their lands in west Jerusalem from which they were exiled in 1948. After Palestinian refugees return to their homes stolen from them in 1948, then perhaps we will have something to talk about.

|Israel Rejects U.S. Call to Hold Off on Development ||ETHAN BRONNER - The New York Times - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Sunday an American call to hold off on a planned Jewish housing development in East Jerusalem, saying Israel’s sovereignty over the disputed city could not be challenged. Mr. Netanyahu issued the statement because State Department officials had raised concerns over the project with Israel’s new ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, during discussions last week on a range of issues. The American officials suggested that going ahead with the development now would cause problems in negotiations toward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"House demolitions in East Jerusalem, then, break individual families and work to push Palestinians into the West Bank, where they lose the privileges of permanent residency."
|My First House Demolition||Liza Behrendt -
because it was my first, I was hit hard emotionally. On Via Dolorosa, a neighbor allowed us onto their roof... We could see the family watching, and at one point could hear them screaming at the authorities.
The actual demolition was cynically ironic: the first stage of the demolition was performed by the family themselves, to avoid excess fines (yes, the families are billed thousands of dollars to pay for the demolition). This is apparently a common way for families to avoid debt in these cases. Then, the second stage (removing the walls and roof) was carried out by a construction crew, or “destruction crew”, comprised of mainly Palestinians.
