Israel`s fundamentalist horizonAnshel Pfeffer - Haaretz "Sometimes the news cycle is so short that you blink and it`s gone. If I hadn`t glanced at Ynet on Sunday evening, I would have missed it...Google confirmed I had not been hallucinating. On Sunday at the Hurva Synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem, an organization called Komemiut held a "day of introspection and prayer" to mark seven years since the dismantling of the Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip. One of the main speakers at the event was Elyakim Levanon, a man who holds the state-funded position of Regional Rabbi of the Samaria Regional Council. "Whoever raises a hand on Migron - his hand will be cut off," said Levanon. "And the prime minister should also know this. There is a law and a judge." ca31/8/2012

Beyond the separation wall: A visit to Jerusalem`s forsaken enclavesZvi Benninga - +972 "Israel’s policy is to have its cake and eat it too: It does not provide residents with services it is obligated under law to provide, but will not allow the PA to enter and fill that void either. When one crosses the municipal line into the West Bank where the PA is permitted to be active, the infrastructure improves tremendously – the appearance of the streets, the general cleanliness and the buildings are substantially better. Among the services denied of the enclaves are also emergency services: there is no policing, no fire department and ambulances cannot pass through. For example, recently when a resident called the police to report an ongoing assault, no unit was deployed, and instead he was told to cross the barrier and report the event on the other side. Young Israelis Held in Attack on ArabsISABEL KERSHNER - The New York Times - The mob beating came on the same day that a Palestinian taxi on the West Bank was firebombed, apparently by Jewish extremists, though there have been no arrests. The two episodes, along with a new report by the United States State Department labeling attacks by Jews on Palestinians as terrorism, have opened a stark national conversation about racism, violence, and how Israeli society could have come to this point.-rh22/8/2012

Israeli govt to provide grants to build hotels in West Bank settlementsKate - Mondoweiss "A special panel will propose that the government give grants for building hotels in West Bank settlements near Jerusalem to absorb some of the the high demand for hotel rooms in the capital. A new interministerial committee of experts convened this year to designate priority areas for the coming years; it is expected to hand its proposals to the cabinet soon. According to a separate study, Jerusalem could suffer a shortage of accommodations in the future. They provide 10 percent support for construction of other tourist attractions." ca 3/8/2012
