| PLO slams Israeli security cabinet meeting in occupied East Jerusalem as `provocation` | | Ma’an News Agency - "Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Secretary-
General Saeb Erekat denounced on Sunday a meeting of the Israeli security
cabinet held earlier in the day in tunnels located underneath the Old City of
occupied East Jerusalem as a `provocation` and proof that Israel `insists on
sabotaging international efforts` for peace" [ry] | 29/5/2017 |

| The one day Jerusalem`s Palestinians fear the most | | Suleiman Maswadeh - +972 - In my childhood I witnessed right-wing Israelis violently rampaging through the Old City, and especially in the Muslim Quarter where I lived. These rampaged only intensified over the years, due to the security situation as well as the leniency of the authorities. Those who celebrate Jerusalem Day know full well that these kinds of actions are an outright provocation toward the city’s Muslim inhabitants. This is especially felt in the Muslim Quarter.-rh | 24/5/2017 |

| Liberal Jews stage sit-in to block annual ‘Jerusalem Day’ march into Muslim Quarter Israel/Palestine | | Allison Deger -
Mondoweiss
" As Israelis marked “Jerusalem Day,” a commemoration of
Israel’s capture of the eastern half of the city in 1967 with a
parade through the Old City, a group of left-wing American Jews and
Israelis blocked their path with a sit-in. Annually the “march of
the flags” starts with rallies in the western half of the Jerusalem,
followed by tens of thousands of mostly teenaged Israelis marching
with banners through the Muslim Quarter, ending at the Western
Wall." ca | 27/5/2017 |

| Jerusalem Day and the country without a capital | | Akiva Eldar -
Al-Monitor
"The annual marking of Jerusalem Day, on May 24 this year, has
become a raucous, nationalist demonstration of Israeli ownership of
the city, in general, and the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, in
particular. Tens of thousands of youths affiliated with religious
Zionism march through the Muslim Quarter on their way to the Western
Wall, waving Israeli flags and calling out slogans peppered with
curses at the Palestinian residents hiding out in their shuttered
homes. Instead of defending the Palestinians against these power-
drunk youths, the police oblige merchants to close their shops along
the parade route and to stay away. This year, to mark the
celebration of the 50th anniversary of the “liberation of
Jerusalem,” the police permitted the extension of the so-called
dance of the flags to include the walls of the Old City from the
Jaffa Gate to the Dung Gate." ca

| For Palestinians in East Jerusalem, Israeli Bureaucracy Goes From Bad to Intolerable | | Nir Hasson -
Haaretz
"Unfortunately for Dr. Samir Masri, a resident of East Jerusalem,
his son Omar was born prematurely during a family trip to the United
States. Because his wife is a native of the West Bank who is in the
midst of the “family unification” procedure, their baby had no legal
status in Israel when they returned. Thus began their Kafkaesque
journey through the bureaucracy of the Interior Ministry office in
East Jerusalem, which has a reputation for its poor treatment of
Palestinian residents of the city." ca

| Is the Western Wall part of Israel? Trump is a bit uncertain | | Eric Cortellessa - Times of Israel - A senior member of the US delegation preparing Trump’s
visit next week angrily rejected a request that PM Netanyahu
accompany the president when he visits the Western Wall. The
American told Israeli counterparts that this part of the Trump visit
would be "strictly private", and burst out with "“What are you
talking about? It’s none of your business. It’s not even part of
your responsibility. It’s not your territory. It’s part of the West
Bank.” When faced with sharp protests by the Israeli government and
American Jewish groups, the White House announced that the Western
Wall comments were “unauthorized” and do not represent the stance of
the Trump administration. It is not clear, however, whether
Netanyahu would be able to accompany Trump there. [ak] | 16/5/2017 |

| `We shall remain`: Bedouin of Jabal al-Baba face an uphill battle to keep their land | | Mersiha Gadzo -
Mondoweiss
"Life was so simple before the [separation barrier] because you
could leave for vacation, for weddings; you could take your car and
go to Jerusalem,” Mazara’a said.
“You could pray Maghrib [prayer just after sunset] here and then
pray Isha [evening prayer] at al-Aqsa.” Such a scenario today
remains a distant dream for the Bedouins living at Jabal al-Baba,
also known as Pope Mountain, even though Jerusalem is only 2.5 miles
away. Now, Bedouin communities stand in the way of the E1 zone,
which would expand settlements from Ma’ale Adumim to occupied East
Jerusalem...Israeli authorities seek to relocate 18 Bedouin
communities that live in E1 and a total of 46 Bedouin communities
living in the central West Bank." ca

"A spokeswoman for the Israeli police said internal security

opening ceremony.
The intensive deployment of soldiers at the Shuafat checkpoint and
its vicinity affected the movement of citizens living in the area
from and to Jerusalem. The Shuafat barrier or checkpoint is one of
the West Bank’s hottest flashpoints, where confrontations happen
almost on a daily basis between Israeli soldiers and local young
men." ca

| How Israeli Moves in Jerusalem are Scotching Trump’s ‘Ultimate Deal’ | | Jonathan Cook - Counterpunch - A decision by Donald Trump this
Thursday could prove fateful for the immediate future of Jerusalem,
the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the region. He must decide
whether to renew a presidential waiver, signed by his predecessor,
Barack Obama, that expires on June 1. The six-month waiver delays
implementing a law passed by Congress in 1995 that requires the US to
recognise occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate its
embassy there from Tel Aviv.It is a law every president for the past
22 years has baulked at. It would pre-empt the Oslo accords and negate
Washington’s assumed role as “honest broker”. Carrying out Congress’s
wish would deny the Palestinians East Jerusalem, the only credible
capital of a future Palestinian state.-rh | 31/5/2017 |

| 140,000 Palestinians threatened with loss of Jerusalem residency | | IMEMC - According to the Israeli Channel 10 TV, quoted by Gulf
News, Israel`s national security council resolved to no longer
consider the Shu’fat Refugee Camp and the suburb of Kafr Aqab as
parts of municipal Jerusalem. The two locations were included in
Israel`s unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem in June 1967.
However, they were left out when Israel constructed the "Separation
Wall". Muneer Zughair of the Neighbourhoods Committee said that
residents were already suffering from a lack of municipal services
and facilities, and from frequent water shortages. Fakhri abu-Diyab
of the Committee in Defense of Occupied Jerusalem said that 140,000
Palestinians — 75,000 at Shu’fat and 65,000 in Kafr Aqab - might
altogether lose their Jerusalem residency permits, while at the same
time Israel would retain security control and continue conducting
armed raids. [ak]
