| How the UAE-Israel deal seeks to impose a `fait accompli` in Jerusalem | | Juman Abu Arafeh - Middle East Eye - While the normalisation
agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates is seen by many
as a historic peace deal between the two countries, analysts in
Jerusalem say it will bring “everything but peace to the region”. A
report by Terrestrial Jerusalem, an Israeli organisation that tracks
developments in Jerusalem that could impact political processes or
spark violence, says that the phrasing of an initial joint statement
between Israel and the UAE raised fears of restrictions to Muslims’
rights to pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, known to Israelis as
the Temple Mount, while legitimising Jewish prayers there, in
violation of a longstanding agreement. Israel-UAE deal: In Jerusalem,
Palestinians feel betrayed but not surprised. (rh)

| A decisive moment in the struggle over the settler-inspired Jeursalem Cable Car Project | | Sue Surkes - Times of Israel / Emek Shave - The government and
various other bodies have failed to submit by a Supreme Court
deadline of September 6 to prove the “factual basis” on which they
claim that a planned cable car to Jerusalem’s Old City will boost
tourism. The court has given them an extension until October 1.
Meanwhile, however, tenders are already being issued to strat the
project. The plan’s many critics say that the cable car will turn
Jerusalem’s most precious historic vistas into a theme park. An
analysis of traffic data undermines the assertion that the the cable
car will relieve traffic congestion along the Old City walls. The
analysis suggests that an increase in shuttles would be a better,
faster, and cheaper way of ferrying tourists. Not mentioned in the
depositions to the court - but very much in everybody`s mind - is
the political dimension. The cable car is a project inspired and
strongly promoted by the radical nationalist settlers, as a way of
further "Judaising" the Old City. [ak] | 8/9/2020 |

| EU implies Serbia, Kosovo could risk EU membership bid with Jerusalem embassy | | Lorne Cook - Times of Israel - The European Union warned Serbia and
Kosovo on Monday that they could undermine their EU membership hopes
by moving their Israeli embassies to Jerusalem. “There is no EU
member state with an embassy in Jerusalem,” European Commission
spokesman Peter Stano said. “Any diplomatic steps that could call
into question the EU’s common position on Jerusalem are a matter of
serious concern and regret.” In Belgrade, Serbian officials appeared
to be stepping back from the embassy pledge, with Foreign Minister
Ivica Dacic saying the final decision on the Embassy move will still
have to be discussed by the government and will depend on “a number
of factors”. And Kosovo needs to consider not only the EU but also
Turkey, with which Kosovo has long-standing ties. Kosovo’s President
Hashim Thaci was on the phone with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan, trying to assuage Turkish concerns. [ak] | 8/9/2020 |
