Gaza`s only Grand Piano makes music againTim Whewell - BBC News - During the last cycle of war in Gaza, the Nawras Theatre was heavily damaged by an Israeli bomb landing nearby. It is now a scene of destruction. Almost miraculously, the theatre`s concert grand piano - the only one in Gaza - survived unscathed in the middle of the wreckage. However, long exposure to the elements has left the strings inside completely rusty, in no condition to make music. A long patient work by Claire Bertrand, a young French music technician, succeeded in reviving the grand piano, with the project financed by the conductor and piano virtuoso Daniel Barenboim, who gave a concert in Gaza four years ago. The moment was celebrated with a small concert by pupils of Gaza`s only music school, at a nearby wedding hall, to which the piano was provisionally moved. The school`s star piano pupil, Sara Aqel, aged 15, sat at the piano and performed Beethoven`s 19th sonata.[ak]27/11/2018

His three daughters were killed in Gaza – but he still clings to hope for the Middle EastRobert Fisk - The Independent - In a large photograph are seen Izzeldin Abuelaish`s three daughters, Mayar, Aya and Bessan, sitting on a blustery Gaza beach in the early new year of 2009. Two weeks after it was taken all three of them were killed in an Israeli shelling.(...) He speaks Hebrew, of course, and was speaking Hebrew on a live broadcast to Israeli television in the room where his daughters’ remains were lying in their blood in January 2009. It would be pleasant to record that this changed everything, that the Israelis realized finally, in one terrifying, humbling live broadcast that their army’s butchery of the civilians of Gaza – along with its pathetic Islamist militia – must now end. But the wars went on. They still go on. [ak]13/11/2018
