The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil,    but because of the people who don't do anything about it

The benevolent bureaucrats of military occupationMaureen Clare Murphy - EI - "Israeli occupation bureaucrats shamelessly exploit Palestinian patients from Gaza to present their military rule over a besieged people as benign or even benevolent" [ry] 31/12/2018

Gaza Christians Obstructed from Travelling to BethlehemIMEMC News - "According to local sources, the Christians, who form a minority in Gaza, annually apply for `holiday permits` to the West Bank, however, most of the time Israeli authorities purposely file permits for the parents and not the children, or, in other cases, for the mother and not the father" [ry] 24/12/2018

Chasing dreams outside Gaza’s wallsHamza Abu Eltarabesh - EI - “Traveling is a distant dream for most people in Gaza. Gaza’s economy is in freefall: there is widespread poverty, little hope, no prospects and the regular bouts of violence affects everyone. The sheer enormity of people’s situation here means thoughts of leaving are uppermost in the minds of many, especially the young and ambitious” [ry] 24/12/2018

The left-right debate in Israel is over the speed of colonization, not how to end itJonathan Ofir - Mondoweiss "In a recent interview with TV host Avri Gilad one of the organization’s leaders, Uzi Arad, former head of the Institute for National Security Studies, laid out the group’s vision and said they hope the campaign is “hitting the awareness” of people. The vision is the notion that the ‘Jewish and democratic’ state is under threat – a demographic threat. The whole discussion is framed against the notion of a possible annexation of Area C of the West Bank, which comprises more than 60% of the area, surrounding some 165 Palestinian enclaves in a Bantustanized archipelago. This area C under full Israeli control is a design of the Oslo Accords of the mid 1990’s. Prominent proponents of its immediate annexation are people such as Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and Education Minister Naftali Bennett (both Jewish Home party), who are to the right of Netanyahu. These areas have contained an estimated 300,000 Palestinians in a UN count of 2014, and it is likely close to 350,000 by today. Shaked says that Israel can afford ‘absorbing’ this population." ca15/12/2018

No Dramatic Makeover Can Turn Abu Dis Into the Capital of PalestineJONATHAN COOK - Washington Report on Middle East Affairs - Any visitor venturing to this small West Bank town is confronted by a vast expanse of 26-feet-high concrete slabs—Israel’s so-called separation wall. Sections are charred black by fires residents set years ago in the hope of weakening the structure and bringing it down. Before the wall was erected more than a decade ago, Abu Dis had a spectacular view across the valley to Jerusalem’s Old City and the iconic golden-topped Dome of the Rock, little more than half a mile away. It was a few minutes’ drive—or an hour’s hike—to al-Aqsa, the third holiest mosque in Islam, or the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the reputed site of Jesus’ crucifixion. Now for many of the 13,000 inhabitants, Jerusalem might as well be on another planet. They can no longer reach its holy places, shops, schools or hospitals.-rh11/12/2018
