| Sanders runs to left of J Street and 2020 opponents on aid to Israel | | Bryant Harris - Al Monitor - Four Democratic presidential candidates
now support conditions on Washington’s annual $3.8 billion military
aid package for Israel, but Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., wants to go
further than both his opponents and the liberal lobbying group J
Street. J Street and at least three Democratic candidates have set a
formal Israeli annexation of certain West Bank settlements as their
red line for conditioning the annual military aid package. Sanders,
however, issued a broader call to condition the aid on human rights
and living conditions in the Gaza Strip — a line that received
booming applause from the conference’s rank and file attendees.
“If you want military aid, you’re going to have to fundamentally
change our relationship with the people of Gaza,” Sanders said at
the conference today. “In fact, I think it is fair to say that some
of that $3.8 billion should go right now to humanitarian aid in
Gaza.” [ak] | 29/10/2019 |

| Female Hunger Striker Reveals Details of Torture in Israeli Prison System | | IMEMC News -
" Al-Labadi also explained that she was interrogated for 20
consecutive hours during the first 16 days of her detention, and
said that she was given only two breaks for meals, each day. She was
then moved to rooms full of collaborators, who started to
interrogate her; this lasted for up to 35 days, during which she was
subjected to verbal, physical and psychological abuse. The Israeli
interrogators, she insisted, got close to her body intentionally and
used the dirtiest of words to insult her.“They also insulted Islam
and Christianity,” she said, “and said that I am an extremist, and
told me that they had arrested my mother and sister, and they would
put me under renewable administrative detention for seven and a half
years, and then release me to the West Bank, and put me under 24-
hour surveillance.” ca

| Returning to Yaffa, but only as a ‘tourist’ | | Mariam Barghouti -

"I watch the beach waves undulate back and forth in Yaffa. I hear
Hebrew all around me, mixed with the laughter of youth. Men, women
and children lounge under umbrellas whipping in the sea breeze.
Occasionally, Arabic escapes from the mouths of Palestinians who are
of the city.In 1948, after Zionist militias occupied Yaffa, a
quarter of Palestinians were forced to flee. Israel’s Absentees
Property Law allowed for the official confiscation of the emptied
Palestinian homes and lands. Yaffa’s Old City has been turned into
an Israeli artist colony. I walk feeling so foreign, yet the city is
so loud with its Palestinianisms." ca

| After 18 months of conflict, some Gazans dare to question Hamas border protests | | Fares Akram -
Times of Israel
"... a growing number of Gazans who believe the protests have lost
their way. With little to show from 18 months of demonstrations and
border riots beyond the hundreds of people killed or wounded by
Israeli fire, many Gazans are beginning to question and even
criticize the Hamas-led protests, a rarity in a territory where
dissent is barely tolerated by the Gaza rulers." ca | 11/10/2019 |
