Splintered but not broken: A history of Israel’s independent leftMatan Kaminer&Joel Beinin - +972 "The Independent Left in Israel, 1967-1993, a volume dedicated to Noam’s memory, explores the history of the activism that worked in this space. The book’s introduction, by Noam’s son Dr. Matan Kaminer and Prof. Joel Beinin, is presented here in abridged form.Even at its height, the independent left was never a cohesive social movement; yet it never fell entirely apart, either. Among the developments to which it contributed, we count the broad opposition to the First Lebanon War; the popularization of refusal to serve in the IDF (in Lebanon, in the occupied territories, or altogether); and the promotion of dialogue with the Palestine Liberation Organization and the two-state solution." ca30/5/2020

Palestine remembers the Freedom Flotilla - events at the ports of Jaffa and AcreThe International Flotilla Coalition - Palestinian and Jewish activist will commemorate together a decade since the lethal attack on the first Flotilla to Gaza, at two events to be held simulataneously at the posts of Jaffa and Acre. The International Flotilla Coalition is planning another flotilla that will focus attention on a significant portion of the Palestinian population under Israeli occupation: young people and children who are half of Gaza’s population. This flotilla was scheduled to take place in May, but due to the Corona crisis and traffic restrictions imposed on large parts of the world, this plan has been postponed at this stage. [ak]26/5/2020
Human rights organizations to Israeli government: Lift movement restrictions against Amnesty International employeeRoy Yellin - B`Tselem - "We stand in solidarity with our colleague from Amnesty International, Laith Abu Zeyad, and demand that Israel lift the movement restrictions barring him from leaving the Occupied Territories. His petition against the restrictions imposed upon him will be heard on 31 May 2020. Targeting Abu Zeyad is yet another example of Israel’s increased persecution and punishment of human rights organizations in recent years. This includes preventing international activists and human rights workers from entering the country and forming a ministry that creates blacklists and engages in censorship. [ak] 26/5/2020
International Court Prosecutor persists in asserting jurisdiction over Palestinian territoriesPCHR (Palestinian Center for Human Rights) - The Government of Israel Israel had mobilized various jurists, as well as several countries - most notably, Germany - to present "Observations of Amici Curiae" to the International Criminal Court - asserting that the court has no jurisdiction in the Palestinian Occupied Territories and therefore all complaints on Israeli acts there should be dismissed out of hand. PCHR Welcomes the Response of the Prosecution, which submitted a 60-page document re-affirming the position that there is a reasonable basis to initiate an investigation into the situation in Palestine and that the Court has territorial jurisdiction over the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip. PCHR is well aware that the ICC Prosecutor is working under extreme pressure due to recent attacks and threats by the United States and Israel, and praises the Court for taking a position that reflects the view of Palestinian human rights organizations, and the victims they represent, despite the difficult circumstances they operate under.[ak]5/5/2020
