`One system, one policy`: Why Human Rights Watch is charging Israel with apartheid | | Amjad Iraqi + +972 Magazine - The word “apartheid” has undoubtedly
become a centerpiece of the mainstream public debate around Israel-
Palestine this past year — and today, the once-taboo term may have
received one of its biggest endorsements yet. Human Rights Watch, a
leading organization monitoring rights abuses worldwide, released a
major report arguing that Israel is committing the crimes of
apartheid and persecution — both defined by the Rome Statute as
crimes against humanity — on both sides of the Green Line. The 213-
page report details the ways in which Israel is intentionally
pursuing the domination of Jews over Palestinians in all parts of
the land, as well as in the diaspora, regardless of their legal
status. “Every day,” the report reads, “a person is born in Gaza
into an open-air prison, in the West Bank without civil rights, in
Israel with an inferior status by law, and in neighboring countries
effectively condemned to lifelong refugee status, like their parents
and grandparents before them, solely because they are Palestinian
and not Jewish.” Among other recommendations, the report calls on
states to condition military aid to Israel and impose targeted
sanctions against Israeli officials deemed responsible for the
crimes [ak]. | 29/4/2021 |

Sens. Sanders, Warren call for ‘restricting’ US aid to Israel at J Street confab | | Jacob Magid - Times of Israel - “If we’re serious about arresting
settlement expansion and helping move the parties toward a two-state
solution, then it would be irresponsible not to consider all of the
tools we have at our disposal,” Senator Elizabeth Warren told the J-
Street conference. “One of those is restricting military aid from
being used in the occupied territories. By continuing to provide
military aid without restriction, we provide no incentive for Israel
to adjust course”. For his part, Sen. Bernie Sanders also declared
himself in favor of the US using its aid as leverage. “I strongly
believe that we must also be willing to bring real pressure to bear,
including restricting US aid, in response to moves by either side
that undermine the chances for peace. It is totally appropriate for
the United States to say what that aid may and may not be used for.
In my view, the American people do not want to see that money being
used to support policies that violate human rights and treat the
Palestinian people as second-class human beings”. Both Warren and
Sanders called on Israel to do more to ensure that Palestinians are
vaccinated. “Jewish settlers in the West Bank are receiving
vaccinations, while few Palestinians have any access to life-saving
shots,” Warren said.[ak]

16th Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony Held With Message of Peace | | Haaretz - Bar Peleg - “The strong feelings that accompanied me were hatred, revenge and complete certainty that I was right … I believed that giving up revenge would be like losing [my brother] again and betraying him. But then, just before I finished high school, by chance I met Ali from East Jerusalem and the friendship that developed put my whole worldview to the test.” Gili Meisler, whose brother Giora was missing for two years after the Yom Kippur War until his remains were returned from Egypt. // Layla Alsheikh, 43, from the village of Battir in the West Bank said that 19 years ago her baby son died after inhaling tear gas from a canister that had been thrown into their courtyard. She described the hard road she was forced to travel with her son to get medical attention. “Despite all this, I didn’t look for revenge, I focused on protecting my other children.” The online ceremony (because of Corona) was organized by Bereaved Parents and Combatants for Peace. It was watched by more than 200 000 worldwide. [bz]

Canada`s New Democratic Party calls for boycotting settlements, stopping arms trade with Israel | | Michael Bueckert - Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle
East (CJPME) - The policy convention of the New Democratic Party
voted for “ending all trade and economic cooperation with illegal
settlements in Israel-Palestine,” and “suspending the bilateral
trade of all arms and related materials with the State of Israel
until Palestinian rights are upheld.” These resolutions were adopted
by an overwhelming 80% majority. [The NDP is not in a position to
itself gain power in Canada, but on various past occasions it held
the balance between the mainstream Liberal and Conservative parties
and may do so again. ak] | 15/4/2021 |

Supreme Court allows minister to `temporarily` block Israel Prize for left-wing math prof. Oded Goldreich | | Times of Israel - Michael Sfard, Goldreich’s
attorney, said that Gallant and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit
“created a clear McCarthyistic track for denying the Israel Prize to
people with positions opposing occupation, expulsion and apartheid,
and thus bar from it an entire political camp in Israel that is
guilty of the same crime.” Prof. Oded Goldreich,
a professor at the Weizmann Institute, was nominated for this year`s
prestigious Israel Prize in the field of Mathematics, for his work
on computational complexity theory - but Education Minister Yoav
Galant is determined to deny him the prize, over Goldreich having
signed a petition calling upon the German Parliament not to define
the BDS movement as "Antisemitic". The court gave the minister 30
days to determine whether he has the right to block the granting of
a prize on such grounds. That means that Goldreich will not get the
prize at the ceremony on Israel Independence Day next week - though,
if the final decision should go against the Minister, he might get
it at a later time. The prize’s mathematics and computer science
committee said Thursday it was dismayed that the award had turned
into “a political playing field, and that the regulations of the
prize are not being upheld by the education minister.” [ak]

Imprisoned Militant Barghouti Will Challenge Abbas’s Party in the Palestinian Election | | The New York Times - Marwan Barghouti, a highly respected
Palestinian militant serving multiple life sentences in an Israeli
prison, broke with the leadership of the dominant Fatah party that
controls the Palestinian Authority - escalating a power struggle and
dimming the party’s hopes of retaining a monopoly on power in
parliamentary elections. From his prions cell, Mr. Barghouti
commands considerable respect among many party cadres and is
considered a potential future candidate for Palestinian president.
Fatah members acting on his behalf broke with the party, forming a
separate electoral slate that will compete against Fatah in the
elections in May and posing a direct challenge to Fatah’s 85-year-
old leader, Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority.
