West Bank farmers face ruin after trees uprooted The Electronic Intifada - It was difficult for 87-year-old Jamil Khader to discover that nearly all of the 1,400 olive trees his extended family planted in February had suddenly gone missing, having been uprooted and stolen. "He became very ill when I told him. He was hospitalized and was in bed for a week," his son Khalil, from the small town of Jeet in the northern West Bank, told IRIN. The family reckon that the trees were uprooted in March but they did not find out about it until 16 April, when they got to the land, which they do not do regularly because of its proximity to the nearby Israeli settlement of Kedumim28/4/2008
Israelis Claim Secret Agreement With U.S. Americans Insist No Deal Made on Settlement Growth Glenn Kessler - Washington Post - "Ehud Olmert, the current Israeli prime minister, said this week that Bush`s letter gave the Jewish state permission to expand the West Bank settlements that it hopes to retain in a final peace deal, even though Bush`s peace plan officially calls for a freeze of Israeli settlements across Palestinian territories on the West Bank. Settlement bloc expansion is the most destructive Yariv Oppenheimer - bitterlemons.org - The settlement of Modiin Illit, which in early March was declared a full-fledged municipality, offers an excellent example of the way Israeli governments have obliterated the green line and de facto annexed territory while simultaneously proceeding with peace negotiations. In 1993 when the Oslo accord was signed, the land adjacent to the Palestinian village of Bil`in was empty. Yet within three years, even as a process unfolded whereby Israel recognized the right of the Palestinian people to a state in the West Bank, construction began on the Modiin Illit settlement to provide housing solutions for the ultra orthodox sector. Today, this settlement comprises 37,500 residents. Plans are advancing to expand it deeper into the West Bank; just this week two new enlargement plans were released. [[NB] This is what the struggle of Bil`in is all about. ed]8/4/2008
AT-TUWANI UPDATE: March 2008CPTHebron - "On several occasions during March Israeli soldiers declared areas near At-Tuwani “Closed Military Zones”, forcing families and shepherds off their land and preventing them from grazing sheep and harvesting spring herbs. These closures followed incidents in which settlers arrived in areas where Palestinians were grazing sheep and began to assault both Palestinians and sheep. The incidence of this type of harassment has increased with the start of the spring grazing season, as shepherds attempt to utilize their grazing land"7/4/2008

Expanding Settlements Means Removing Palestinian People from their Land: The Story of Baqa’a Ahmad Jaradat - AIC - “The story of Baqa’a valley powerfully illuminates the results of each so-called peace negotiation on the ground and therefore the feelings of Palestinians towards it. During the Oslo process, 60 demolition orders were issued in this area and now, only a few months after the Annapolis Conference and the promise to freeze settlement expansion, an additional 32 demolition orders now weigh on the negotiations. At the same time, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak announced the construction of new housing units in the settlement blocs of Gush Etzion, Ma’aleh Adumim, Givat Ze’ev, Ariel, Elkana and Efrat” 3/4/2008
Umm al-Kheir -- Story continuedEhud Krinis - Email Message - "The village is not supplied with running water nor electricity, and its abject poverty is terribly and flagrantly visible (especially in view of the standard of living enjoyed by their neighbors in the settlement 20 meters away)."2/4/2008
