Moskowitz Prize for Revanchist ZionismRichard Silverstein - Tikun Olam - The right-wing settlers, believe it or not, have their own Nobel Prize. Just as Alfred Nobel created his award based on a checkered fortune earned from manufacturing dynamite, Irving Moskowitz funds his “Lion of Zion” award based on his checkered fortune as a U.S. bingo and hospital mogul. The Moskowitz Prize is an attempt to add luster and prestige to the notion of killing Arabs and stealing their land. No doubt, had he lived, Meir Kahane would’ve been one of the first recipients. 24/12/2009
Thumbs Up To The Right-Wing RefuseniksMeir Margalit - That dismantlement is essential in order to make possible the creation of something new and sane. The State as it currently exists, in the form in which it has solidified in the past 40 years, is so twisted that it cannot be straightened out. The Occupation has penetrated so deeply that it is very hard to put it on the right path, and so nothing remains for us but to close the shop and start everything anew. The Occupation contains within it itself the seeds of the disintegration of the State, and it is a good thing that the settlers are now hastening the natural process that stems from the roots of the Occupation. Today it is clear to all that it is impossible to have both the State and the Occupied Territories, and that the Occupation is causing not only corruption but also disintegration. 24/12/2009
Settlers attack schoolchildren in al-Bweireh neighborhoodRyan Shiffer - CPT HEBRON - Chased by stone throwing settlers with a dog, seven-year-old Amar Zatari tripped and fell on his face - one incident in years of harassment. Afraid to walk home by himself, the boy waits an hour-and-a-half each day until his brother’s classes are dismissed. 22/12/2009

No freeze on Palestinian suffering : International excitement about the West Bank settlement freeze means little to those facing the sharp end of Israeli military ruleSeth Freedman - The Guardian - Thanks to the army`s exclusion orders, we were forced to walk a treacherous and convoluted route through the rocky scrubland to visit communities living in even deeper seclusion beyond Tuwani. In Tu`ba, the cave-dwelling residents of the village are under no illusion about what the future holds for them, despite all the hype surrounding the much-vaunted settlement freeze. "The freeze will have no effect round here," the father of the household told us bitterly. Our guide expanded on the theme, telling us that the "real freeze is on Palestinian construction: 95% of Palestinian applications for building permits in Area C are denied by the civil administration, and for communities in this area they are not allowed to build above ground whatsoever". 17/12/2009
Israel expresses anger at new Palestine food labelsValerie Elliott - The Times - "...the purpose was to give consumers more choice in their purchases and to let them distinguish between goods from Palestinian growers and those from illegal Israeli settlements." 16/12/2009
Party over for rabbisAlex Fishman - Ynet - "You can no longer have it all – study, serve only half of the military service term, enjoy the prestige of military service and the national-patriotic honor you seek, enjoy all the rights that discharged soldiers have, receive financial support for hesder yeshivas, and spit in our face." 16/12/2009
West Bank Is Tense After Arson at Mosque ISABEL KERSHNER - NYT - "“The people will not allow it,” said Wasfi Hassan, a local farmer. “It is like killing a man, then going to his funeral.”" 14/12/2009
Israel Approves Millions in Funding for SettlementsJason Ditz - Antiwar - "The funding will only be provided to a portion of the settlements, with a large amount reportedly planned for isolated settlements."14/12/2009
Yediot links Yitzhar Rabbi to torching of mosque [incl. new primary document]Zvi Singer/Didi Remez - Rabbi Yosef Elitzur of the Od Yosef Hai yeshiva in Yitzhar published an article in the extremist right wing newsletter called Hakol Heyhudi [The Jewish Voice] in which he explicitly called for operations like the arson at the Yasouf mosque. “Operations of reciprocal responsibility,” is how Rabbi Elitzur chose to define them.13/12/2009
Tax-exempt terror: The US cash behind extremist settlersYaniv Reich - Hybrid States - Settlers are not some magical force of nature. They are a state-sponsored movement to drive out Palestinians from their ancestral homeland and move Jews to the newly created space. They are also sponsored by US tax-exempt organizations which give them millions of dollars each year to further their agenda of ethnic cleansing. 12/12/2009
UK issues new guidance on labelling of food from illegal West Bank settlementsIan Black & Rory McCarthy - guardian.co.uk - Britain has acted to increase pressure on Israel over its West Bank settlements by advising UK supermarkets on how to distinguish between foods from the settlements and Palestinian-manufactured goods. The government`s move falls short of a legal requirement but is bound to increase the prospects of a consumer boycott 12/12/2009

Barkan Wineries boycott continuesGush Shalom - Gush Shalom has rejected the demand of Barkan Wineries to remove the company`s name from Gush Shalom`s list of settlement products. The Gush Shalom spokesperson told the company`s representative that as long as Barkan Wineries continue to maintain vineyards on the Golan Heights, which is an occupied territory, Gush Shalom will continue to regard it as a settlement company.6/12/2009
84 Structures To Be Built In West Bank Settlementsby Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies "Maj. Gen. Eitan Dangot, coordinator of government activities in the occupied territories, stated that the constructions will go ahead as the decision was made before Israel declared the temporary settlement freeze."4/12/2009
IDF fears settlers may attack Palestinians in response to freeze By Anshel Pfeffer, Chaim Levinson, and Barak Ravid Source: Haaretz "In recent days, inspectors delivering freeze orders to the settlements have been met with acts of violence, yet the troops from the Judea and Samaria Division and the Central Command - who are responsible for their safety - are nowhere to be found. Instead, the brunt of the security work has been carried out by police and Border Police troops." 4/12/2009

Freeze won`t hurt NetanyahuBenjamin Pogrund - The Guardian - The settlements are but one of the issues that Israelis and Palestinians must sort out. A halt to building will not in itself bring peace. But ending construction and dealing with the fact that settler numbers have swollen to some 300,000 since the 1967 conquest of the West Bank, plus another 200,000 in East Jerusalem, are among the indispensable steps towards reaching a peace deal. 3/12/2009
Boycott of Ahava Dead Sea products makes an impact Adri Nieuwhof - The Electronic Intifada - According to the Israeli group Who Profits From the Occupation? (www.whoprofits.com), the mud used in Ahava products is taken from a site on the shores of the Dead Sea inside the occupied territory, next to Kalia. Ahava uses Palestinian natural resources without the permission of or compensation to the Palestinians. Meanwhile, Israel denies Palestinians access to the shores of the Dead Sea and its resources, although one-third of the western shore of the Dead Sea lies in the occupied West Bank. 2/12/2009
Netanyahu stresses freeze is `temporary`Roni Sofer - Ynet - "Peace Now Director Yariv Oppenheimer commented on Netanyahu`s statement, saying it effectively leaves the move "empty and irrelevant."" 2/12/2009
IDF: Mild resistance to settlement freeze orders Roi Mandel - Ynet - "Among the protestors was Kiryat Arba Council head Malachi Levinger, who said, "We would like them to disappear to where they came from."" 2/12/2009
Palestinians: Dead Sea won`t be a `world wonder`Roni Sofer - Y-net - The Dead Sea is among 27 sites around the world competing for inclusion in a list of the "New Seven Wonders of Nature". The Palestinian Authority has an interest in its winning - but will not cooperate with Israel on promoting its candidature, as long as the Israeli settler-based Ahava Company continues to exploit the Dead Sea resources. 1/12/2009
Settlers, Settlements, and Natives in Australia and Palestine Max Watts - The Big White Man said he was from `The Department` and would arrest me. For my permit-less presence in Yarraba. I said I had been invited by Shorty O`Neal, an aboriginal elder, and had no idea that an invitation was insufficient, must be backed up by some kind of permit. I learned that that was, in effect, the law. Visitors to Aboriginal `reservations` did need a permit from `the Department`. Shorty had simply forgotten to tell me. 1/12/2009
Another EU policy statement will not stop Israel`s colonization Hasan Abu Nimah - The Electronic Intifada - On settlements, the document quite rightly "urges the government of Israel to immediately end all settlement activities, including in East Jerusalem and including natural growth, and to dismantle all outposts erected since March 2001." "Outposts" is a term Israel uses for small settlements erected in violation of Israeli regulations, as if settlements Israel has authorized are somehow legal. So by asking only for the dismantling of "outposts," the EU is in effect recognizing Israeli sovereignty in the West Bank by deferring to Israel`s definition of what is and is not a "legal" settlement. This EU recognition is a major diplomatic victory for Israel. All the settlements are equally illegal under international law, and Israel is equally obligated to remove all of them. 9/12/2009
Settlers: Security forces treat us as enemyTOVAH LAZAROFF - J-lem Post - ""What have we come to when police assault an elected official?" asked Gur Aryeh." 9/12/2009

We are all settlers - How Israel manipulates its citizens Amira Hass - Haaretz - "The settlers` feeling of betrayal is natural. Haven`t the state and its institutions taught us that the settler is superior to everyone else?" 9/12/2009

The moment of truth Issa Samander - Bitterlemons - And what is this freeze? It is a temporary, 10-month construction halt for private housing units not already approved in some parts of the occupied territory. East Jerusalem is exempted, as are 3,000 housing units already approved and buildings "necessary for normal life", from synagogues to kindergartens. It is, in other words, not a freeze at all. 17/12/2009
The US cash behind extremist settlers : The Hebron Fund is raising vast sums for Israeli settlements that violate the Geneva convention, with little scrutinyAndrew Kadi and Aaron Levitt - The Guardian - Perhaps more worryingly, according to Washington Post columnist David Ignatius: "A search of IRS records identified 28 US charitable groups that made a total of $33.4m in tax-exempt contributions to settlements and related organisations between 2004 and 2007." Some of the larger organisations, including Friends of the Ateret Cohanim and Friends of Ir David, both leading the Jewish settler takeover of Palestinian East Jerusalem, are based in New York City. 9/12/2009
