Soldiers deny farmers access to their landWafa - Two Palestinian farmers from Husan, west of Bethlehem, were blocked by soldiers and settlers and denied access to their plot of farmland which is located in the middle of the Beitar Illit settlement. Soldiers assaulted Mahmoud Ellayan, a photojournalist with al-Quds newspaper, when he tried to take pictures of the incident. It is the common settler practice, when expanding into what are defined as "state lands" and encountering a plot to which a private Palestinian has impeccable credentials, to go around such plots and leave them as enclaves within the settlement. In theory the owner retains ownership and should be granted free access, but in practice the settlers often place considerable obstacles with the aim of eventually taking over such lands. ak21/1/2014

Israeli-Dutch tensions rise over pension fund divestementHerb Keinon - Jerusalem Post - For the second time in the last month and a half, the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Dutch ambassador to protest against a large Dutch company’s decision to sever ties with Israel. PGGM, one of the Netherlands’ largest pension funds, cut off all contact with Israeli banks because of their involvement in settlement construction. Its dealing with Israeli banks is relatively minor, amounting to tens of millions of euros, but sets a dangerous precedent should other financial institutions follow suit. Raffi Schutz, the Israeli ministry’s deputy director-general for European affairs, told the ambassador that the decision of PGGM pension fund to divest from Israel is "unacceptable and relies on false pretexts".
