Israel`s Logic of Dispossession Amira Hass - Haaretz "The invasion of two Palestinian houses in Hebron’s Old City last week by dozens of Israelis was an obvious, logical step. We still don’t know on what basis the settlers decided that the two houses on Al-Sahla Street were purchased legally. The Zaatari family of Hebron, which owns the houses, denied selling them. In a complaint to the Israel Police, which was submitted via the (Palestinian) Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, the family demanded their immediate eviction. The mystery remains..." ca 29/1/2016

Among the settlersPhilip Weiss - Mondoweiss "The settlers told me that the great political development of the last year or two is that the Tel Aviv elite now concede that the settlers are never leaving. The elites give lip service to a Palestinian state because the world wants to hear that. But few in Jewish Israeli society even want that to happen; it would tear the country apart." ca29/1/2016

Settlers evicted from Hebron homes – for nowSergio Yahni - AIC - Like many houses in the area, the buildings occupied by the settlers were not physically populated. The insecurity created by continuous settler attacks military harassment has led many of the 30 thousand residents of Hebron`s Old City to leave the area. Additionally, large parts of Hebron`s Old City were declared closed military zones in mid-November. According to military orders, local Palestinian residents must register with Israeli authorities to pass through the area`s 18 checkpoints. Palestinians fear that this new registration system helps the army and settlers to map empty properties in order to facilitate expropriation. [bz]25/1/2016

Israel Approves New West Bank Homes, Marking End of Informal Building Freeze Chaim Levinson - Haaretz - Israeli planning authorities approved the construction of 153 new apartments in West Bank settlements last week, effectively putting an end to an informal construction freeze that has lasted about 18 months.
- For almost two years now, the government has largely refused to advance new building plans in the territories, due to fear that the U.S. administration would retaliate by refusing to veto anti-Israel resolutions in the UN Security Council.
- In addition, Jerusalem’s local planning and building commission gave final approval last month for construction of 891 units in East Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood. The plan had received initial approval in late 2012, but was then put on hold. [bz]

Netanyahu supports ‘settlement at any time’ after Hebron incidentAFP - Al-Bushra - Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said the Jewish “squatters” were evicted because they had not followed legal procedures. But Netanyahu said Sunday that “as soon as the procedures regarding the purchase are approved, we will allow the two homes in Hebron to be populated, as indeed occurred in similar instances in the past.” Netanyahu heads a coalition with only a one-seat majority in parliament, making him especially vulnerable to the demands of religious nationalists in his cabinet.
