| Obama`s Jewish surrogate wants balance, pressure in peacemaking | | By Ron Kampeas/Lisa Hostein - JTA (Jewish Telegrpahic Agency) - Daniel Kurtzer, the first Orthodox Jew to serve as envoy to Israel, "Obama`s Jewish surrogate" and a likely senior adviser should Obama be elected president: The Annapolis process is a sham(...) both sides are guilty of noncompliance during the Oslo process, especially the Palestinian failure to stop terrorism. In recent years, however, two of the most striking examples of noncompliance were Israel`s pledges in 2003 and 2004 to remove settlement outposts; it was never carried out, and the Bush administration did nothing in response. (...) There is an example of the consequences that could be exacted for failing to live up to such commitments. The first President Bush`s witheld loan guarantees to the Shamir government until it agreed to freeze settlement building in 1991.Such tensions create political price, often undermining Israeli leaders who need to prove to their elctorate that they have the confidence of the U.S. president and the American Jewish community.

| Israelis stage daring saga of the abandoned Palestinian raised as a Jew | | Donald Macintyre - The Independent - "There will be many glitzier events to mark the 60th anniversary of Israel`s foundation as a state next month. But there is unlikely to be one more intellectually daring than this production – with a uniformly impressive mixed Jewish and Arab cast – of Israeli writer Boaz Gaon`s play. Daring first because it is adapted from a famous novella by Ghassan Kanafani, widely regarded as the 20th century`s greatest Palestinian writer. […] And daring second because the story goes to the heart of how what for Israelis is the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence that ushered in the state, is also for Palestinians that of the Nakba or wartime catastrophe in which some 700,000 people had to flee their homes" | 14/4/2008 |
