Israeli, American submarine activity suggests show of force against Iran | | Ben Caspit - Al Monitor - The Israeli submarine story was first revealed on Dec. 21. Israel’s public broadcaster Kan television reported that an Israeli sub had crossed the Suez Canal “openly and with Egyptian approval.”
The report cited Arab intelligence sources, but Israel did not deny it. On the same day, Israel Defense Forces chief Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi issued a warning to Iran. “Lately, we’ve noticed a rise in Iranian threats against the State of Israel. If Iran and its partners, members of the radical axis, either directly or by proxy, take action against the State of Israel, they will find themselves in a very costly endeavor,” Kochavi said at a military awards ceremony. “The IDF will strike all those involved in activities against the State of Israel or against Israeli targets, whether in part or in full, whether near or far.”
Israel’s eyes are focused on the Jan. 3 anniversary of the assassination of Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander Qasem Soleimani. [bz]

Dealings between Netanyahu and Raam party head MK Mansour Abbas | | Arutz Sheva - Hezki Baruch (contact editor) - According to several unnamed senior government officials, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is pushing for regularization of "illegal Bedouin settlements" - as the settler media formulates it - in the Negev as part of a deal arranged between him and the head of the Raam party, MK Mansour Abbas.
In return, the officials told Arutz Sheva on Wednesday, Netanyahu is said to be requiring that Raam either recommend him to form the next government after elections in the coming month of March, or at the very least, to refrain from recommending anyone else. [bz] | 23/12/2020 |

Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a joint statement with Egyptian

Jordan, Foreign Minister al-Malki said that the Palestinian
Authority is ready to co-operate with U.S. president-elect Joe Biden
on the basis of achieving a Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem
as its capital on territory Israel captured in 1967. [ak] | 23/12/2020 |

What next for Western Sahara after Morocco-Israel deal? | | AFP / Y-net - U.S. President Donald Trump`s surprise backing of
Morocco`s claim to sovereignty over disputed Western Sahara upended
years of international consensus, but will this break a deadlock or
inflame a conflict? The U.S. took the unprecedented move of formally
recognizing Morocco`s claims to Western Sahara, a quid pro quo deal
for Rabat announcing it was "resuming" diplomatic ties with Israel.
Rabat hailed the U.S. announcement as a "historic breakthrough",
saying it is the guarantor of stability in the region.
The Polisario front, with its long lasting struggle against Morrocan
Rrule, responded angrily: "Trump`s declaration "violated the
decisions and resolutions of all international bodies... Polisario
will press on with its fight until the total withdrawal of Moroccan
troops". The 1991 ceasefire already collapsed, with Polisario
claiming repeated exchanges of fire, although details are murky in a
region largely off limits to journalists. The possibility of further
escalation largely depends of Algeria, Morroco`s regional rival and
the main backer of Polisario. The Algerian President and Prime
Minster already warned that "Algeria is strong" and that it would
respond "destabilizing foreign manoeuvres". [AK] | 16/12/2020 |

Hanan Ashrawi resigns from PLO Central Committee | | Hanan Ashrawi - PLO Dept. of Public Diplomacy (last statement in
that capacity) - After several days of media rumors, Hanan Ashraw
officially declared her resignation from the PLO Executive
Committee. In her statement, Ashrawi declared her resignation to be
"Consistent with her lifelong commitment to the principles of
integrity and transparency", since "It is time to carry out the
required reform and to activate the PLO in a manner that restores
its standing and role, including by respecting the mandate of the
Executive Committee rather than its marginalization and exclusion
from decision-making" and since "The Palestinian political system
needs renewal and reinvigoration with the inclusion of youth, women,
and additional qualified professionals". The letter of resignation
does not mention the PA decision to resume coordination with
Israel, which had been suspended in May. In media report, Ashrawi
was reported to be "angry at the way it was done". She might have
been angry at the PLO Central Committee not having been consulted
about this step. [ak] | 9/12/2020 |

App makes killing Palestinians as easy as ordering pizzas | | David Cronin - Electronic Intifada - The app would allow a commander to type details about a target on a small electronic device and then troops would open fire on that target swiftly - as easy as ordering a pizza from the smartphone. It has been developed by the Israeli arms maker Elbit Systems.
For several months, Elbit has been the focus of protests organized by the group Palestine Action in Britain.
The protests – which have included temporary shutdowns of an Elbit-owned plant near Birmingham and invasions of the firm’s London offices – have evidently irritated Israel and its lobbyists. An Israeli minister is reported to have asked that the British government suppress them. [bz] | 2/12/2020 |

`Carmiel is a Jewish city,’ court tells its 2,760 Arab residents | | Aaron Boxerman - Times of Israel - The city of Carmiel in northern
Israel was
originally founded in the 1960s as part of a government attempt to
expand the Jewish presence in the Galilee, where Arabs made up most
of the population. But in recent years the city had seen a growing
influx of upper-middle class Arab professionals, by now making up
about 6% of the city`s population. There is,
however, no Arabic-language school inside the city, forcing Arab
parents to send their children to various schools in the
area`s Arab towns. Attorney Nizar Bakri, a Carmiel resident, filed a
lawsuit on behalf of his brother Qassem and his two nephews,
demanding that the Carmiel municipality pay for the children`s
transportation. However, judge Yaniv Luzon of the Krayot
Magistrate’s Court dismissed the appeal out of hand, writing that
"The construction of an Arabic-language school or providing
transportation for Arab students could change the demographic
balance and the character of the city". Judge Luzon cited the
controversial 2018 "Nation-State Law", which says that “the right to
exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is
unique to the Jewish people” and “advancing Jewish settlement is a
national value, to be encouraged and advanced". Bakri, the attorney
who filed the
lawsuit, deemed the judge’s final point “far from the matter at hand
and racist”, and intends to appeal to a higher court. Meanwhile, the
Supreme Court is soon due to hear appeals against the entire "Nation
State Law". Actually, the Carmiel ruling could serve that appeal,
show that the law legitimizes the
outright discrimination of Arab citizens. [ak] | 2/12/2020 |
