Breaking The Silence

nrg/Maariv 29 March 2005

“A good thing there was a camera there”

Combat soldiers in action rarely use cameras to immortalize the moment. Maybe because some of them, at least at that moment, prefer to forget. To repress. Last week “G”, a combat soldier in regular service, told of one of the actions he had carried out: “Too bad there was no camera there, so they could see, so those on the outside could know, that it won’t stay between us and the Palestinians.” The pictures shown here were collected in recent months, and they teach something about what is happening on the other side, about what IDF soldiers see every day, about what they are experiencing. An army that has found itself bogged down inside private homes, among swings and small children. Things seen from there are not seen from here. But sometimes, for all that, it is worth taking a look. Breaking the silence.
