Israeli Settlers yell Death Threats at Palestinian children going home from school
At-Tuwani, Palestine
24 October, 2008

[Note: According to the Geneva Conventions, the International Court of
Justice in the Hague, and numerous United Nations resolutions, all Israeli
settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are illegal. Most
settlement outposts are considered illegal under Israeli law.]

Israeli settlers from the settlement of Maon in the South Hebron Hills
harassed and yelled death threats at Palestinian elementary schoolchildren
on their way home from school on Thursday 23 October 2008. The children
were returning from school in the village of At-Tuwani to their homes in
the villages of Tuba and Maghaer al Abeed escorted by an Israeli army
humvee. The soldiers were not walking with the children. Two adult Israeli
settlers chased them, throwing stones and threatened to kill them. The
children started running while the soldiers remained in their vehicle and
got out of the humvee only at the conclusion of the escort.

The Israeli military is responsible for escorting the children past the
settlement of Maon and settlement outpost of Havot Maon. The Israeli
military continues to fail to escort the children safely past these
settlements, despite repeated attacks on the schoolchildren.

Ma`on settlers attacked the schoolchildren on their way home from school a
week ago, on Tuesday 14 October 2008, when two adult settlers threw stones
at the children and chased them towards Tuba.

Settler attacks on the schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghaer al Abeed have
been a recurrent problem for years, and the implementation of an Israeli
military escort has failed to solve the problem. In the 2007-2008
academic year, settlers attacked the children a total of 14 times, as
documented in the report A Dangerous Journey: Settler violence against
Palestinian schoolchildren under Israeli military escort
