Bethlehem – Israeli troops shot and killed a Jerusalem man at the Betar Illit-area military checkpoint west of Bethlehem on Tuesday morning.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Walid Rabi At-Tawil, allegedly refused to stop his car after being ordered to do so by Israeli forces manning the post.

The illegal settlement of Betar Illit was established in 1985, according to its website, approximately half a kilometer from the Green Line border with Israel. Some 35,000 predominantly religious settlers now live in the area, which lies on the Israeli side of the separation barrier.

A news release from the Israeli military said At-Tawil `ignored calls to undergo the required security checks, accelerated towards the soldiers and drove through the crossing.` The military said soldiers chased after the vehicle, which they said they found it at a nearby gas station.

Soldiers reportedly told At-Tawil to stop the car, shot in the air, and then at the tires of his car. The shots to the tires allegedly failed to stop the vehicle with which At-Tawil `attempted to run over IDF [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers.`

He was then shot and killed, the military said.

JP title: `Arab shot trying to run over soldiers`

IDF reservist troops shot and killed an East Jerusalem man Tuesday morning after he attempted to break through a checkpoint and run over soldiers near the West Bank settlement of Beitar Illit, south of Jerusalem.

When the driver failed to stop at the checkpoint, soldiers fired warning shots in the air and at the tires of the vehicle. According to an IDF statement, the driver accelerated, lightly wounding a soldier in the process.

The army said that troops apprehended the vehicle at a nearby gas station, and shot the driver dead after he again failed to heed calls to stop. A paramedic team confirmed his death at the scene.

The incident was being investigated. According to Channel 2, it is believed that the soldiers had no choice but to open fire on the vehicle. The driver was known to IDF sources to have transported illegal workers in the past.

Overnight Monday, meanwhile, IDF troops arrested five wanted Palestinians during West Bank night ops. The detainees were taken for interrogation by security forces.
