Olive harvest in the West Bank
Yesh Din
3.10.14

Today was the first day of the olive harvest in the West Bank. Already this morning we received the first reports from Palestinian farmers on damage that was caused to tens of olive trees in the village of Yasuf and about 15 additional trees that were destroyed in the village of Burin.

It is important to note that even though the Israeli army has publicly committed to having its forces ready and reinforced in the run-up to the harvest, with special focus on well known friction zones, the severe damage that was reported today occurred exactly in the most predictable spots.

According to Yesh Din Executive Director Neta Patrick, `Year after year, the Israeli security and law enforcement system fails to protect Palestinian-owned olive trees, and to bring to justice those responsible for the damage of trees and the theft of crops. We call on the army to learn from today`s events and provide decent protection throughout the remainder of the harvest season from vandalism carried out by Israeli citizens.`
