Yesh Din`s Legal Advisor, Adv. Michael Sfard, appeared last night before the U.N Security Council, one of the principal organs of the U.N, and presented members of the Council with the organization’s data on law enforcement regarding ideologically motivated crime perpetrated by Israeli civilians against Palestinians, and the consequences of lack of law enforcement on the lives of Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. A lack of enforcement that enables the continuous violence against Palestinians, which is part of a long-term effort to dispossess them of their lands.

Mr. Sfard explained to the council members that while Israeli law enforcement agencies succeed in solving crimes committed against Israeli citizens, apprehend the culprits, prosecute and severely punish them swiftly, and in many incidents even prevent the attack. But when the victim is Palestinian, Yesh Din`s data indicates that 85% of the investigations opened into ideologically motivated crime against Palestinians are closed due to police investigative failures. The figures also indicate that there is a mere 1.9% chance that a complaint filed by a Palestinian with the Israel Police will result in the conviction of the perpetrator/s.

Two additional experts appeared before the council members - Sarah Leah Whitson of Human Rights Watch and Prof. Ardi Imseis of Cambridge University. Mr. Sfard told the council members that `Yesh Din vigorously and unequivocally condemns all human rights violations and all international law infractions. There can be no justification for attacks on civilians no matter whoever the perpetrators are and whatever the identity of the victims is`.

After the three experts had spoken, Venezuela`s U.N Ambassador, Rafael Ramírez, asked if Israel sought a `final solution` against the Palestinian people. Mr. Sfard, protested against the use of this term, saying that using the term `final solution` in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is `offensive, angering and completely incorrect`. Ambassador Ramírez then apologized to Mr. Sfard and the Jewish people.
