Syrian official slams private, public sector monopolies

By Agence France Presse (AFP)
Wednesday, October 19, 2005

DAMASCUS: The deputy prime minister for economic affairs, Abdullah Dardari, warned on Tuesday that private and public sector economies were standing in the way of planned reforms in Syria. `The Syrian economy is subjected to public and private monopolies. For the economic reforms to succeed, it is necessary for these monopolies to stop,` he was quoted as saying by Tishrin newspaper.

`Because of these monopolies we are having difficulties with our entry into a market economy,` said Dardari. `These comments will not please everyone.` Dardari said Syria was `faced with the challenge of turning our economy into a competitive economy. We must take more measures to liberalize the economy.` Syrian economic experts such as Nabil Sukkar have warned that big money has been joining forces with people in government `at the expense of the common interest` of the country. - AFP
